"They refuse the Poets passage, and even Virgil cannot convince them to allow it, as he did many times before. Allegorically, Human Reason cannot can't deal with evil by itself. Therefore, divine assistance must help them; for that reason, Virgil prays."

This symbolizes hardships we have to go through everyday. In though situations we can rely and fall back on our comforts and relgion. Sometimes we can't do it on our own.

"After waiting anxiously, and while warding off the threats of the Furies and Medusa, an Angel, a Holy Messenger from Heaven arrives. He was sent by God in answer to Virgil's prayer for help."

This further confuses me on the reason that virgil is in hell. It says that he is there because he had no religious beliefs but he prayed to God for help? I would think he could leave Hell...kinda like when prisoners get out on account of good behavior.

Heretics are those that deny God's existence, and they don't believe in eternal life. Therefore they are put to eternal death this a vast firey cemetary.

I think this is a very fitting punishment for the heretics. Dante believes that every sin in life should have an equal punishment. It's interesting that the ones who deny eternal life are condemned to eternal death.

"The Angel flies through without looking left or right; Hell has no effect on him, except he fans the stench of Hell from his face"

So people that have are dead and are angels can visit heel?

If Hell has NO effect on Dante, then why is he going through this? Is it to show him how badly Hell is? But still, it says it has NO effect on him.

Racheal is exactly right. We all need help sometimes. We can't rely on ourselves that we will do the right thing.

why does the angel not pay attention to the dammed or that he is in hell

That makes no sense, Dante felt bad for everything he saw and got mad then eventually went against sin. That is an effect so how it saying that it has no effect?

He scorns the devils for their rebellion, touches the gate, and it opens without hesitation.

I think that this is really cool how the angel comes and is so much more righteous and above all of the demons and the damned. All he has to do is touch the gate and it opens. I would rather be in Heaven with angels like this than in Hell with all of the fallen angels and demons, monsters, and evil.

A stream of this river actually flows through the follwing rounds of Circle 7 (throught the woods and sand). It then spews over the Great Barrier and continues on through Circle 8. Finally, it empties to the last circle, 9, where its wastes freeze in the cold winds of Cocytus.

So , this circle is combined of several circles. So when you enter you go through the blood then go straight to the sand? Would'nt you already be covered in blood so the sand would stick on you, right? Are they in the last circle 9 when it freezes. And what is 'it'? What freezes?

Russell asked, "Why does the angel not pay attention to the dammed or that he is in hell?"

I think that it's because he is holy. Hell is completely separate from him, and he has no part in it. He has never sinned, so hell cannot have wrath upon him. Biblically, there was only one period where angels had a choice to sin or not--when Lucifer decided to overthrow God, they were allowed to choose sides. This angel must have chosen God's side, so is now protected by his Spirit.

To answer Brad's question...
The angels are there because they did not choose a side when Satan and God were at war with each other. The other people are their because they denied God.

I agree with noelle, that the angel is totally seperate and is protected by the spirit.

"Guarding the gates of Dis are the Rebellious Angels, now turned from beautiful to hideous."

If hell is a place of suffering that nowone wants to go why would they have people guarding the gates?

"Guarding the gates of Hell were the Rebellious Angels, once beautiful, now hideous."

To me, this quote is similiar to the passage in the bible where God banishes Lucifer, a once beautiful angel, to hell. When Lucifer is banished from Heaven he essentially becomes Satan, a now hideous creature. I find this comparison very similiar.

he must have no soul so deserves to go to hell.

I thought that Holy beings were not aloud to step foot inside such an unholy place?

How can being violent against art and being violent against God be in the same sin part?

It's not just that the angels can visit Hell, but this angel has been sent by God to help lead Dante and Virgil through.

No but it is different because God sent that angel to lead Dante throgh Hell.

racheal, you said :

I do agree with you on how we can not get through sin on our own but i also think it is saying with out help we keep making those mistakes that take us away from God and if we keep making then and refuse to get help that is what makes us sin and takes us to hell.

...maybe they sent messages for some reason. but why would they want to visit hell?

"the angel" does not refer to Dante, it refers to fallen angles, who have no hope of returning to the paradise they lost, which is the greatest punishment of all.
