Circle Three: "The Gluttonous"

"...it is written: the more a thing is perfect the more it feels of pleasure and pain."

I think Virgil is talking about the 'calm before the storm.' With a good thing, comes a bad thing.

"The sinners, naked, with nowhere to hide, must suffer the cold torrent from above, and the icy paste from below."

A glutton has a desire for something, and I think maybe the rain symbolizes cleansing and washing away, although that isn't what the gluttons want.

"... Here monstrous Cerberus, the ravening beast, howls through his triple throats like a mad dog over the spirits sunk in that foul paste."

I guess in this circle of Hell they are getting a taste of their own medicine and experiencing something that eats and eats with no remorse and in a twist..it is them who are getting ripped apart.

"For the pernicious sin of gluttony
I, as thou seest, am battered by this rain. / and I, sad soul, am not the only one..."

Is this a circle for the Seven Deadly Sins? I see avarice mentioned later.

The sinners, naked, with nowhere to hide, must suffer the cold torrent from above, and the icy paste from below.

Basically all the rain does is make them suffer for doing worng. Like they are getting punished for things that they knew were wrong in life.

"When the poets encounter the beast, Virgil grabs a sop of the dirty snow from the ground and hurtles it into one of Cerberus's throats to choke and distract him as they pass."

In Circle 3 it mentions how mosterous this dog is and how it lets no one out. Wouldn't you think the dog would attack them as well? I mean how much can snow do...

I think that for every good thing there is a bad.

Taken from classical mythology, Cerberus is a three-headed dog who was placed as guardian of the underworld. He would all anyone to enter, but would let no one leave.
the mythological 3 headed beastwould allow you to pass but not return why do you think this is so

A storm of freezing rain, dirty snow, and huge hailstones fall on the Gluttons.

What does freezing rain have anything to do with the gluttonous? I'm sure it symbolizes something but why did they chose freezing rain to symbolize being overweight.

And they, too, howl like dogs in the freezing storm, turning and turning from it as if they thought one naked side could keep the other warm.

This is so horrible. Since through food they got their pleasure from life, now they half to be in horrible pain turning from side to side and howling, like if they had a bad tummy ache.

Sheena, I am with you on this. It made no sense that freezing rain would be the punishment for someone who over ate.

While Virgil and Dante are in the third circle they meat Ciacco (which means Hog). Do you think it is ironic that someone's name who means Hog is condemned to the Gluttonous punishment? Is this due to predetermination?

Sheena asked, "What does freezing rain have anything to do with the gluttonous? I'm sure it symbolizes something but why did they chose freezing rain to symbolize being overweight."

Well, a glutton is not necessarily mean someone who overeats or is overweight. As a general rule, a glutton is anyone who does something in excess, usually spending or something like that. I guess freezing rain is something that a glutton couldn't use in excess.

On the contrary, the reason they are being punished this way is because they knew what they were doing and did it anyways. That is why it is a sin. When you overeat, you know that it is wrong, but you still do it anyways.

"The circle of the Gluttons is a dump of garbage and filth. The souls here, guilty of gluttony, did nothing more with the gifts of God than to consume food and drink--they themselves produced nothing but garbage, and therefore, that's what they recieve and live in for all time."

these people have done nothing all therer lives but take and produce garbage and for that they pay by living in filth.

I think that for every good thing there is a bad.

I think that if u do right then its wrong but if u do opposite will you be doing something good or will u still get the pleasure of pain.

I thought it said that the gluttons were supposed to endure feeling like garbage for the rest of their lifes, not freeze too death naked.

I really like this. I had never really thought about it this way before and i really couldn't see the symbology in the hail that falls all the time. But after you put the symbol of the dog in there it makes more sense.

It says that Cerberus wouldn't let anyone leave. If this is true then how do Dante and Virgil leave?

I agree with Noelle on this. I think freezing rain is used in circle three because it is the one thing that a glutton wouldn't want. I can't really think of anything else that it could represent.

elizabeth, you said :

I think with the pleasure and pain thing, i think he is saying that it's not really pain after a bad thing but it's kind of like when you cry tears of joy. it's not over pain it's kind of over welming.
