"And he to me: "Watch them. When next they pass, / call to them in the name of the love that drives / and damns them here. In that name they will pause."
Does this "love" follow them into death, for them to pause at the mention of it? It must have been a strong love.
Like others in this circle, they are swept up in the tempest, but pause momentarily enabling Dante to speak with them and learn their story. How could the spirits pause in air and talk to someone who said their name?
"In his journey, Dante occasionally is able to speak with souls in Hell; he does so here in Circle 2 with Francesca and Paolo, who are guilty of the sin of Lust."
If Dante is able to speak with souls in Hell, is he able to speak with souls in Heaven also?
Here in The Inferno Dante keeps his vocation as judge, but changes him a bit into a more beast-like character who is full of anger.
Dante turns into a beast-like character of anger because he is upset with everything that has happened so far and thinks that it is all unfair with everything he has seen so far.
Even though Paolo and Francesca are together in this circle of Hell, their love does not live on beyond death.
If they can't be in love, then why are they still together? There a huge circle of Hell and they can both be away from each other easily. Plus Dante says that they are close together and that are still passionate towards each other. What's up with that?
Why does Virgil continue to quiet people who are trying to send Dante back? Is it because Minos is trying to hide something? Or could it be because Dante is still alive and shouldn't be touring Hell at all? Could this be foreshadowing part of the story?
Once Minos has made his judgement, the soul falls away to the assigned circle. This takes place with each soul, one by one, when they appear before Minos.
if minos is the judge of what level in hell they go, then is there even a devil in this book? or an absolute ruler?
A storm of freezing rain, dirty snow, and huge hailstones fall on the Gluttons. It creates a horrible slush which covers the ground in Circle 3. The sinners, naked, with nowhere to hide, must suffer the cold torrent from above, and the icy paste from below.
i thought in hell it is supposed to be firey and burning not freezing. What does the freezing rain represent?
"Beyond Minos are the first souls truly punished in Hell, the Lustful, or Carnal. These souls are caught in a constant whirlwind." i wonder if when it says caught in a constant worlwind if it is bieng literal or metaphorical and if so what it stands for.

It's not their love that was a sin. It's the fact that Francesca cheated on her husband with his brother. They shouldn't be denied each other for eternity simply because they shared a passionate love, even though it was a sin.

then reason i think their still together is because it wasnt their love that brought them there its the fact that they went behind her husbands back & cheated on him & had giving someone else her love & left her husband..
Racheal said.. I don't understand why they were sent to hell. Although cheating is a sin, why should their love be seen as a sin too?
I disagree with Racheal on this one. What they had wasn't love it was lust, which is a sin. Love would be leaving the one you didn't care about to be with each other in the right way, even though divorce isn't necessarily good either. The completely right thing to do would have been to protect their eyes and leave their lustful thought alone. But they pursued them and loved without reason, which resulted in lust and the downfall of another in murder.
"After coming down a ledge, the Poets (Dante and Virgil) enter the second circle where first they meet the beast Minos. He assigns each soul its final place and torment."
Why is Minos at the entrance of circle two instead of circle one? How does he tell the souls that are supposed to be in circle one to go there if they have not yet reached the second circle?
If Dante fears the She-Wolf the most, why does it represent the first division of sins(incontinence)? Could it be that he fears he will be incontinent?

They were sent to hell because they caused a conflict with how Francesca is cheating on her husband with Paolo & causes her husband to come & murder them. which causes him to go to hell for murder & then paolo & francesca go to hell because they are caught for running around on her husband which is a sin..
"And he to me: "Watch them. When next they pass, / call to them in the name of the love that drives / and damns them here. In that name they will pause."
Does this "love" follow them into death, for them to pause at the mention of it? It must have been a strong love.
I think they should know that they are in the wrong cause they were running around on Francesca's husband which is not right. Cause if you make a promise to be married to one another you shouldnt look or wonder around with others cause you made a promise to the one you said you loved. So yes i think that Francesca & Paolo's love for each other led them to hell because they did wrong.

My partner and I absolutely love your blog and find most of your post's to be exactly what I'm looking for. can you offer guest writers to write content in your case? I wouldn't mind composing a post or elaborating on a few of the subjects you write concerning here. Again, awesome site!
Unfortunately, our book only includes a few sections of Dante's Inferno, so we will be using our books and online resources to explore the depths of his allegory.
Our goal is to collect remnants of the Inferno and your own comments and display them on this blog.
What are you supposed to do?
Use the virtual tour link to explore each section. Begin with the Dark Wood, then the Vestibule, and then the circles. Read the given information for each location. For each location, you should find something that you want to comment on or question.
An excellent comment has two characteristics: 1. It should include either a quote from the text (found either in your book or online) or a definition or researched fact that helps you understand the reading. 2. You must also include your thoughts or reaction to the remnant you use.
Once you make you comment, respond to someone else's.
Then move to the next section.
All in all, you should have at least 2 comments for each post.
35 comments:
"And this, I learned, was the never ending flight of those who sinned in the flesh, the carnal and lusty who betrayed reason for their appetite."
Dante is not talking about hunger here. I think he means passion without reason is a sin. Yet, passion with reason is not at all.
"...Circle 2 with Francesca and Paolo, who are guilty of the sin of Lust."
I don't understand why they were sent to hell. Although cheating is a sin, why should their love be seen as a sin too?
"As the wings of wintering starlings bear them on in their great wheeling flights, just so the blast wherries these evil souls through time foregone."
So in this realm all they do is whirl around in a big windstorm? That doesn't really seem like a huge punishment and frankly it's quite dumb.
"And he to me: "Watch them. When next they pass, / call to them in the name of the love that drives / and damns them here. In that name they will pause."

"Dante keeps his vocation as judge, but changes him a bit into a more beast-like character who is full of anger".
How can he change someone? I dont understand that.
Here, there, up, down, they whirl and, whirling, strain with never a hope of hope to comfort them, not of release, but even of less pain.
have you ever felt like there is no hope?
The affair between Paolo and Francesca continued for years until Giovanni caught them and murdered them.
Why would you murder someone for having love for someone else. Yeah it might be a sin to have an afair but i mean its what you decide.

Katie, i believe he is able to speak with the souls in Heaven as well because at the end of all this he is reunited with Beatrice.

I disagree. As a Christian, I am passionate about God because I have reasoned that he was first passionate about me.

I dont think sin should be punished equally. In my eyes, sin is sin and it is all the same condement.

Why is this a judges most prominent feature? I do not understand it.
