Circle Nine: "The Treacherous"

As Virgil climbs down and passes the center, he then turns and begins to climb up.

Virgil to me is seeming like he's tryin to get out of hell because he doesnt want to suffer the pain

The final circle, called Cocytus, is the coldest place Hell. Everything from the rivers, to the blood, to the guilt, all drain here and solidify into a terrible sheet of ice that encases the worst sinners of all, including Satan himself.

This is the complete opposite that most people view Hell to be like, they think of it as hot and fiery..esp. the center of Hell...but ironically it is cold and frozen.

"The very center and bottom of Hell, trapped in the ice at the waist, howls Satan himself. He is Lucifer, The Devil, Dis, the Father of Lies, and here he's encased in an eternally frozen tomb, powerless. In the medieval view, Satan is not running amock in our lives, causing chaos on earth, tempting us to evil--the souls in Hell have freely chosen Sin, Hell, and Death of thier own accord."

Once again...it seems everything we have learned is wrong. Most are brought up believing that Satan is the cause of all wrong in our lives and is tempting us day by day. According to this he has no power what so ever and is eternally frozen without movement or any control at all.

"I looked up, thinking to see Lucifer / as I had left him, and I saw instead / his legs projecting high into the air."

Why does Dante use Satan's angelic name in this verse? It doesn't seem to be a reference to the fact that he was once an angel.

"The Poets find themselves in the River Lethe, the ancient river of forgetfulness, which washes away the grime and evil of Hell from them. Eventually, they reach the other side of Earth, and see dawn breaking, just before Easter Sunday."

I think the River Lethe symbolizes getting baptized. When you are baptized you are washed free of sin, and I think Dante was free of sin when he finds his way out of hell. Finding your way out of hell could also mean finding God, and starting over.

Since Satan marks the center of the earth, he also marks the center of gravity.

This is ironic to me from a Christian stand point. We are told that Satan should not be at the center of anything. So why is he at the center of earth AND of gravity?

"The sinners here are stuck in the ice up to their necks--they can move their necks and bow their heads. They, like Cain, were treacherous against members of their own blood"

Why would they be stuck in Ice? I dont get it

Anonymous said...

Brad, they are stuck in ice because thye showed no love or warmth at any point of their life so now they are eternally frozen.

Anonymous said...

"Treachery lacks all love, and therefore, these sinners are denied any warmth. Since they denied God's love, they are the furthest down in the pit of Hell."

From what I know, I thought Hell was for people who didn't believe in God, and disobeyed him and followed more of Satan.
Why would Satan or whoever control's Hell put these people through so much punishment and tortue for denyng God's love?
Isn't that what he wanted?

Anonymous said...

To answer Katie's question, Satan wants people to deny God's love so he can punish them. That is ultimately what he wants. He thrives on seeing the pain and downfall of others.

Elizabeth commented, "This is ironic to me from a Christian standpoint. We are told that Satan should not be at the center of anything. So why is he at the center of earth and of gravity?"

I think that this is symbolic. Things that are evil in nature are of the earth, not divine. Satan is synonymous with evil, so it would make sense that he is the center of the "earth," or worldly desires, and he gravitates you towards those things.

Coldest what man im confused i thaught that hell was soposed to be a firy pit of moten lava in wich you have to live forever.

Allegorically, Dante now puts Hell and Sin behind him--and now it is overturned in his life, as Satan now appears upside down--all wrong.

I think this is extrememly symbolic of what everyone must do and how we all need to view sin- all wrong. Temptations are everpresent and we give into them becasue we can't see them for what they really are. We see them as cool and we do them because they look good, not bad like they really are.

"On one side, Brutus is the sinner; on the opposite side is Cassius. These are the two men who betrayed and killed Julius Caesar."

People that thought they were doing good got the worst punishment of all?

I sort of agree with Carrie on this one. WHy should it be cold, its Hell? But also i can see that they shoudn't be denied warmth because they are true evil themselves. SO they should get nothing warm or happy.

It's common for people to call Satan Lucifer

amanda, you said :

I don't think he is trying to get out of hell because he doesn't want to suffer. because he isn't suffering but he want's to get out because he has seen enough and what he saw has scared him enough to where he will get back on the path of God.

I think everything composed made a ton of sense.
But, what about this? suppose you were to create a killer post
title? I mean, I don't wish to tell you how to run your blog, but what if you added a post title that makes people want more? I mean "Circle Nine: "The Treacherous"" is kinda vanilla. You might peek at Yahoo's home page and
watch how they create article headlines to grab people to open the links.

You might try adding a video or a picture or two to
get readers excited about what you've written. In my opinion, it would make your posts a little livelier.

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old
daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had
to tell someone!

Hello would you mind stating which blog platform you're working with? I'm going to start my own
blog in the near future but I'm having a difficult time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I'm looking for something unique.
P.S Apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
